"After I turned 30, something happened to my body. I could no longer eat whatever I wanted or maintain the physique I had when I was 21. Last year I tried Weight Watchers, and failed. I could not understand why, especially seeing so many celebrities getting “results.” After about three months, I gave up. I got engaged in December and did not want to get married looking the way I did. I know eating right and exercising would help, but I needed someone to kick me in the pants to do it. I had much more energy, and I slept better in that first week than I had in ten years. My students were wondering what I was doing, because they noticed the change immediately. It was phenomenal! With my newfound energy and sleep, I set a goal to participate in my first race. Having never done it much in the past, running was very difficult for me, especially with bursitis in my knees. However, I am proud to say that because of this lifestyle change, I completed my first 5K race on May 11! I now want to keep going, working my way up to a half marathon. Another goal I set for myself was to fit into a dress that I had purchased three years ago, but was never able to fit into. Now, it not only fits, but I have room to spare! "I met Jess at Tern Crossfit, and I have to admit, I was a little intimidated. Only because she was better than me haha she was in amazing shape with bigger muscles and way less fat than me, and she had more energy than the Energizer Bunny. When Tern announced that she would be holding a nutritional seminar, I thought to myself, "I already know a lot about nutrition and eat pretty well, but I should definitely go to this. She's gotta have some secret I just don't know about." So I went. And I'm so glad I did...
Flash back a few years -- I swam for 20 years, 4 of which were for the University of Alabama, so I was in pretty d*** good shape at the time. After retiring, I picked up weight lifting on my own and jiu jitsu. After I got injured, my doctor told me not to swim or practice jiu jitsu. I was devastated. He did, however, tell me I can do Crossfit and other lifting as long as it didn't aggravate my injury, so I picked up Crossfit 3 years ago. I got back into swimming shape and then some! But I picked up the bad habit of drinking... every single night. I also continued to eat like I was swimming (never a good idea). Of course, despite doing Crossfit, I blew up, and my training suffered for it. My family has a history of alcoholism, obesity, and heart disease, so I knew things needed to change if I want to live the lifestyle I plan to in the years to come. This is when I signed up for Jess's 12 week program.
I'm not going to lie. Changing my lifestyle was hard. I have that addictive personality that created the problem with alcoholism in my family in the first place. I wasn't perfect (peanut butter is a serious problem for me...). But the fact that her program takes you through the steps, changing week by week, allows you to accomplish your goals. I mean, who can't follow a program for a week?!
Jess is so supportive and helpful throughout this process, always there when you need her. I was annoyed by the fact that I downed an entire jar of peanut butter in 2 days, so I redid that week, which is OK! We aren't perfect! That was hard for me to wrap my head around, but Jess was there for me to help me realize this. She debunked so many nutritional myths and helped me to train my body to crave veggies. I'm no longer drinking unless it's a special occasion, and even then, I have no desire to drink a lot. I lost 16lbs of body fat and from what I can tell with my lifting numbers, no appreciable muscle! I am happier, healthier, leaner, and faster than I ever have been before, and my light weight has allowed me to get my first strict ring muscle up! I'm doing things now that I never thought I'd be able to at this time in my Crossfit career, and it's all from changing my diet.

"Hi, my Name is Angelica and I am from Colombia, South America. Before I give my testimony y’all need to know a little about me. I have always been very conscious about the way my body looks. I come from a Country where your appearance it's very, very important. Before I became a mom, I was very petite. I weighted 120 lbs and I was very happy about how I used to look. I always dreamed about becoming a mom and my prayers were answer. I gave birth to my two little girls; 2 years in between. With my first pregnancy I gained 30 lbs. now, I am going to be very honest here. I ATE everything I was craving and everything I wanted to eat. Yes, I had the excuse of “ being pregnant “ breastfeeding help me to lose some weight but no all of it. I got pregnant with my second daughter and yes, I did take care of my eating this time. I ate healthy but I did not exercise at all. Why? Because I was very scared of losing my child. I was one of those high risk pregnant ladies. Once my baby was like 4 months I stared exercising and dieting but I was not seeing results. I was very hard on myself and to be honest with you, I am still very hard with my body. I had a personal trainer, I joined Gold’s gym, I did everything I could. My husband and I moved to Florida 2 years ago and decided to be part of this new Trent of Crossfit. I met Jess, she was one of the coaches. I was in shocked. First of all, she is the sweetest, funniest and happiest person ever. But her body, I mean, her body rocks.!!!!! I was like, I want to be as tone as she is! Who wouldn’t?? So, I asked her to help me, I told Jess I wanted to lose some weight and she told me… WE GOT THIS! I weighted 136 lbs when I started my 12 weeks program. That was July 2018. I have lost 16 pounds with Jess and I couldn’t be any happier. Jess not only taught me how to eat but also taught me discipline. I don’t consider the 12 week program a diet, but a new style of healthy eating. I am back to my 120 lbs and I am able to wear all my college clothes all over again. Its not easy, I do have to say that. But its worth the try.

"This has been an amazing journey, a journey that has just begun. I have been over weight for most of my life. My health has been a serious problem for 10 years, with several issues requiring daily medication. This was new to me, so I was apprehensive. To my surprise, I could not believe how great I felt after just one week! I visited my doctor prior to starting for lab work and to review the plan due to my many health issues. I am diabetic. My A1C test results from February 21 was a 9.8. I saw my doctor again on May 8, and his nurse called me to give the good news that my A1C dropped to 7.5!! That was the first time I had heard him say “Keep up the good work, diet and walking!” It was that moment when I realized just how much this had changed my life for the better, and the weight loss was the just an added bonus! Before I started this program, I did not even register on the Body Fat Percentage scale. That meant I was well over 50% body fat. Now, I can proudly say that I not only register on it, but it decreases each and every time I check! This challenge has given me a new start, adding years to my life. My friends and family could not be happier for me and my health improvements. My youngest nephew just told me yesterday that I was shrinking. My clothes just hang off of me now! Friends have commented on how much happier I am and how great I look. I will continue to use what I have learned, and in the near future I will not need that extra seatbelt extension when flying. I will not be turned away from an amusement park ride because I am too large. I will be able to go skiing with the family and take a lesson or two. I will not be embarrassed to be photographed. I look forward to the day that medication is no longer needed to control my diabetes. "I have a long history of yoyo and fad dieting. At 61, it was time for a transition in my life. My two older daughters were about to graduate from professional schools, and I wanted them to feel as proud of me as I was of them during their graduation ceremonies. When I first started working out with Jess, I had high blood pressure and uncontrolled Type 2 Diabetes. The doctor told me that if I did not lose the weight I would have to go on insulin. My blood pressure has improved and my morning sugar levels are consistently below 105! It is a relief not to carry around those 16 pounds. Size 10 hasn’t looked this good in almost 30 years! Amazingly, this lifestyle has not been difficult. It was so specific and detailed that I did not have to guess (or think) about what I could or could not eat. I have become quite the food label snob. All of the synthetic ingredients that go into our food now fascinate me. I have astonished myself with my results, and I have been able to carry the diet plans over to my family and they have seen results as well. Beyond the weight loss, this has been a life-changing journey. I am excited to continue this for the rest of my life. "Getting healthy and in shape has always been a struggle for me. After using other methods of weight loss and failing, I needed an alternative to my lifestyle, food choices and exercise program that would be more permanent; more realistic. This experience has provided a long lasting support system to make greatly needed changes in my life. Before working with Jess, I could not hold myself up in a plank for one second. Now, I can plank for two minutes! I recently finished a 5 mile cancer walk, a personal best compared to a previous 3 mile stint. I now understand that it is not what you cannot do, but how you can be challenged to accomplish your goal. Before training with Jess, the severity of my sleep apnea exceeded all charts.
